Anxiety Q & A

When does anxiety become a health concern?

Everyone experiences daily anxiety, whether they’re worried about traffic or facing the first day on a new job. No matter what causes your anxiety (or its severity), the feeling immediately triggers a surge of hormones. The hormones energize your body so you can face the situation or flee from danger.

Problems begin when you frequently feel anxious, causing the stress hormones to stay at high levels. Everyday anxiety turns into an anxiety disorder when you stay on high alert, anxiety becomes a constant problem you can’t shake, or you change your daily life to avoid anxiety,

What symptoms develop due to anxiety?

In addition to anxiety (anticipating a possible threat in the future) and fear (a response to a real or perceived threat), anxiety disorders cause symptoms such as:

  • Dread
  • Worry
  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Stomach aches
  • Muscle aches
  • Difficulty sleeping

The symptoms of a panic attack (pounding heart, sweating, chest pain, and dizziness) are so severe that many people feel they’re having a heart attack.

How does ketamine infusion therapy treat anxiety?

Though the conventional treatment for anxiety includes psychotherapy and medication, about half of people don’t improve with this approach. If your anxiety persists, ketamine infusion therapy can help.

Ketamine is a medication that travels to your brain, where it relieves anxiety by balancing brain chemicals and restoring nerve connections.

Your provider administers ketamine through an intravenous (IV) infusion. An IV allows them to precisely control the dose you receive and the rate at which it infuses into your body.

Many people experience a rapid improvement in their anxiety, with their symptoms improving within hours of their first infusion. However, you receive several ketamine infusions to determine its overall effectiveness. If your first few sessions are effective, your provider may schedule additional ketamine infusions to achieve optimal results.

What should I expect during ketamine infusion therapy for anxiety?

You only need to relax in the treatment chair while your provider closely monitors your infusion. Most people don’t have any problems during a ketamine infusion, but you may feel sleepy or experience nausea, vision changes, or high blood pressure.

You could also feel confused, feel like you’re floating, or develop mild hallucinations. Your provider quickly adjusts your treatment to reduce side effects. If side effects persist during your infusion, they go away shortly after your treatment stops.
